Founded in 1963 by Jacint Vilardell in memory of the Catalan tenor Francisco Viñas, this competition has established itself as one of the most important events in the world of opera, oratorio, and Lied, attracting young singers from all over the world every year.
To facilitate participation and bring the competition closer to singers from other countries, the Gran Teatre del Liceu has agreements with opera houses in Madrid, Paris, London, Berlin, Milan, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Beijing to hold preliminary auditions.
The Final Round takes place every January at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, along with the Final Concert featuring the prize winners accompanied by the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to receiving the Official Prizes, winners are also awarded other recognitions such as scholarships and contracts for performances at various theaters and festivals.
As part of the collaboration between the Liceu and the Teatro Real in Madrid, the winners of the main prizes of the Competition will participate in the “Concert of the Award-Winning Artists of the 57th Tenor Viñas Competition,” which will take place on April 6, 2025, at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
