Víctor Garcia de Gomar
Artistic director
Víctor Garcia de Gomar (Barcelona, 1975) is the Artistic Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, a position he has held since September 2019 following the agreement of the Theatre's Executive Committee on January 14, 2019.
Fascinated by the human voice as an instrument, he completed his higher studies in singing (baritone) and piano at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu, where he received the Conservatory’s Honorary Mention. He participated in staged operas and recitals while also attending masterclasses with Magda Olivero, Joan Pons, Jaume Aragall, Dalton Baldwin, and Kamal Khan, among others. This attraction to the voice led him to cast some important conductors, launch a new "Grans Veus" (Great Voices) cycle at the Palau de la Música, and offer concert versions of operas in the same venue. He has worked with renowned artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Cecilia Bartoli, Gustavo Dudamel, Juan Diego Flórez, Piotr Beczala, Philip Glass, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, John Adams, and William Christie, among many others.
Aware that contemporary cultural management requires a dual focus—both artistic and managerial—his biography reflects a convergence of passion for music and opera, a creative understanding of the artist's reality, and the integration of various disciplines with the perspective of managing budgets, utilizing management tools, and coordinating teams. It also includes the solid foundation necessary to ensure the viability of cultural projects. His education balances studies in law at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, a postgraduate degree in leadership and management of cultural institutions, companies, and platforms at the same university (1999-2000), as well as programs at IESE (PDG 2015-2016), Kellogg School of Management (2018), and Harvard Business School (2019). He also possesses a flexible and disruptive sensitivity fueled by the imagination required for someone who strives to engage with culture and its future.
A seeker of stimulating professional challenges, his experience in both the public and private sectors has enabled him to balance different projects while making a commendable and recognized contribution to improving institutions such as the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Auditori de Girona, the Nits de Clàssica Festival in Girona, the Baroque Orchestra of Seville, the Music Service of the "la Caixa" Foundation, and weekly collaborations with Catalunya Música radio station. He has also taught at various Catalan universities and published a book about musicians’ favorite recordings. These projects have naturally aligned with his passion.
It is precisely this passion where his main skills, abilities, and knowledge converge—the desire to contribute to a new narrative, to a project that makes opera the richest and most beautiful way of understanding the world. He aims to expand the artistic landscape by integrating other disciplines, fostering innovation, collaborating with some of the most significant international figures, and maintaining the spark that has made the Liceu one of the most cherished cultural institutions.
In Barcelona and beyond. With a deep connection to the Mediterranean and a commitment to both contemporary times and the audience. His journey began with a love story when he first attended the Gran Teatre del Liceu for the 200th anniversary of Così fan tutte. This initial spark has led him to write the next chapter in this wonderful path.
Josep Pons
Musical director
Considered one of the most important conductors of his generation, Josep Pons (Puigreig, 1957) has built strong relationships with orchestras such as the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestre de Paris, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, WDR Cologne, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with whom he has made several appearances at the BBC Proms in London.
Since 2012, he has been the Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and he is also Honorary Conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra and Choir. He has served as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada and was the founder of the Chamber Orchestra of the Teatre Lliure in Barcelona and the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya (National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia).
