José Manuel Montero

Born in Madrid, this tenor studied singing at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid with Pedro Lavirgen. In 1992, he received a scholarship from the Musikhochschule and the Opernschule in Munich, after which he developed much of his career in Germany as a member of the ensembles of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the State Opera of Hanover, and the operas of Kiel, Wuppertal, and Gelsenkirchen. 

His repertoire has included roles such as Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Don José in Carmen, Rodolfo in La bohème, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Narraboth in Salome, the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier, Baron Zsupán in Die Gräfin Mariza, Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress, as well as Fernando in Doña Francisquita, Gustavo in Los gavilanes, and Miguel in La del soto del parral. Recently, he has added the roles of Herod in Salome, Aegisth in Elektra, and Mime in Siegfried to his repertoire. He makes his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
