He is one of the six artistic directors of La Fura dels Baus and is currently the artist-in-residence at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. He has worked in leading theatres such as the Royal Opera House in London, Opéra National de Paris, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, and La Monnaie in Brussels, among others. Over the course of his wide-ranging and critically acclaimed career, he has directed more than thirty opera productions, including La damnation de Faust, La flauta mágica, Le Grand Macabre, Ascens i caiguda de la ciutat de Mahagonny, Quartett, Tristan und Isolde, Oedipe, Il prigioniero, Madama Butterfly, Faust, L’holandès errant, Pelléas et Mélisande, Il trovatore, Norma, La bohème, Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher, and Turandot. Recent engagements include Ariane et Barbe-bleue in Lyon, Carmen in Tokyo, Idoménée in Lille, and Rusalka in Bergen.
He made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2000/01 season with D.Q. Don Quijote en Barcelona, and has since returned with Diari d’un desaparegut and El castell de Barbablava (2007/08), Le Grand Macabre (2011/12), Quartett (2016/17), Tristan und Isolde (2017/18), and La bohème (2020/21).
