On the occasion of the operas The Cunning Little Vixen and Akhnaten, which open the new opera season at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Amics del Liceu invites you to a new conference dedicated to the world of scenography, led by Ramon Jovells Argelich, PhD and Master in Performing Arts, a passionate researcher of stage design and its evolution throughout history.
Following the success of Jovells’ first conference for Amics del Liceu last season, where we explored the historical evolution of operatic scenography through the works of Richard Wagner, coinciding with the performance of Lohengrin at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in March 2025, we now invite you to a second session in which we will leave the past behind and delve into contemporary creation. We will start from the theoretical foundations of Adolphe Appia, a pioneer in understanding scenography as a living part of the theatrical experience, and move toward the most innovative proposals that have shaped the Liceu stage. We will examine the scenography of some of the most outstanding creators who have left their mark on the Gran Teatre del Liceu, with special focus on two recent productions: Leoš Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen and Philip Glass’s Akhnaten. Two operas, two visions, two ways of understanding stagecraft today.
Through these works, we will explore the narrative, symbolic, and emotional roles of contemporary scenography in a journey that takes us from Appia’s symbolism to the visual poetry of today’s most recent creations.
