The Donostia-born mezzo-soprano Carmen Artaza was awarded the Grand First Prize in the 58th edition of the International Singing Competition Tenor Francesc Viñas in 2021, and also won the Mozart Prize, the Audience Prize, and three other special prizes. Since then, the young artist has performed in numerous European theaters, interpreting both operatic roles and recitals, symphonic concerts, and oratorios.
In recent seasons, she has portrayed significant roles from the mezzo-soprano repertoire, singing Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Bradamante in Alcina at the Hannover State Opera, the role of Luisa Fernanda at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Ino in Semele at the Komische Oper in Berlin, and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly at the ABAO Opera in Bilbao, among others.
This 2024/25 season, the mezzo-soprano sings Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia in the new production of the Rossini opera at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo. She will also sing the role of Falliero in Rossini’s Bianca e Falliero at the Frankfurt Opera and the role of Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel at the Bonn Opera House.
She makes her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
