Carmina Burana, by Carl Orff – version for choir, two pianos, and percussion (1956)

Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1936, based on a collection of medieval poems found at the Benediktbeuern monastery in Germany. The lyrics, written in Latin, Old German, and Occitan, explore universal themes such as fortune, love, desire, and the joy of living. The work begins and ends with the famous chorus “O Fortuna”, a powerful exaltation of fate that has become a symbol of 20th-century choral music.

This version highlights the strength of the voices and the intense rhythm that characterize Carl Orff’s work, while maintaining its energy and spectacle, but with an intimacy that invites a different kind of experience. With the Choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, accompanied by the Percussion Group of the Gran Teatre del Liceu and two pianos, the audience can rediscover Carmina Burana from a new perspective: more direct, human, and vibrant, yet equally striking and captivating.
