Christopher Maltman is one of the most sought-after dramatic baritones today, with a distinguished career on the world’s leading opera stages, including the Royal Opera House, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera, and Teatro alla Scala. Initially known for his roles in Mozart operas, he has expanded his repertoire to include characters such as Iago (Otello), Wotan (The Ring of the Nibelung), Scarpia (Tosca), and Rigoletto.
In the 2024/25 season, he will debut in new roles such as Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Jupiter (Die Liebe von Danae), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), and Escamillo (Carmen). He will also continue performing Wotan (Die Walküre) and Jochanaan (Salome). In the concert field, he will appear in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and Schubert’s Winterreise.
In recent seasons, he has performed iconic roles such as Wotan (Das Rheingold), Scarpia (Tosca), and Iago (Otello), and has collaborated with major orchestras and conductors. A Biochemistry graduate from the University of Warwick, he won the Lied Prize at the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1997. His discography includes The Ghosts of Versailles, a Grammy Award winner, and recordings with Erato.
He has appeared at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Iphigenie auf Tauris (2010/2011), La bohème (2011/2012) and the concert "Netrebko, Eyvazov and Maltman sing Verdi" (2019/20)
