On the occasion of the Akhnaten performances at the Gran Teatre del Liceu this October, we invite you to attend a conference dedicated to this masterpiece by Philip Glass, with stage direction by Phelim McDermott.

The opera, part of Glass’s renowned “Portrait Trilogy” —alongside Einstein on the Beach and Satyagraha— focuses on the figure of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaton, the instigator of one of the most radical spiritual revolutions of antiquity. Through hypnotically beautiful music and a visually powerful stage production, Akhnaten invites the audience to experience a performance that transcends narrative, becoming a fully immersive sonic and symbolic journey.

This conference will provide an in-depth look at the multiple layers of this production: its musical architecture, its stage dimension, and its symbolic and emotional significance. It is an opportunity to rediscover Philip Glass’s creative universe and understand the artistic keys that make Akhnaten one of the most fascinating and innovative operas of the 20th century.
