On the occasion of the performances of Giulio Cesare by Georg Friedrich Händel, which will take place at the Gran Teatre del Liceu during the months of May and June, we invite you to delve into this baroque masterpiece through a very special lecture. Musicologist and music critic Luís Gago will offer an informative session to uncover the musical and dramaturgical keys to this opera, one of the most celebrated in Händel’s repertoire.
This production, directed by Calixto Bieito, presents a contemporary and intense interpretation of the classic, exploring the tensions of power, passion, and manipulation in the historical and symbolic context of ancient Rome and Egypt.
Luís Gago is a musicologist, translator, and music critic. He has collaborated with institutions such as the Spanish National Orchestra and Choir, the Teatro Real, and the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance. He is the author of numerous program notes, articles, and lectures on opera and classical music, and has also translated key works into Spanish, such as Music in the Castle of Heaven by John Eliot Gardiner.
He has served as a classical music editor for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon and Decca, and regularly contributes to specialized media such as Revista Scherzo and El País. With a didactic and passionate style, Gago is one of the most recognized voices in musical outreach in the Spanish-speaking world.
