Carlo Bergonzi (Italy, 1924-2014) was one of the most important tenors of the 20th century. Beyond his impeccable technique and being the quintessential Verdi tenor, he was one of the most intelligent voices of the 20th century, which allowed him to have an exceptionally long career of almost 50 years.
He made his professional debut in 1950 and quickly gained a great reputation for his ability to interpret the major roles of the Italian operatic repertoire. Throughout his long career, Bergonzi became especially famous for his performances in operas by Verdi, Puccini, and other Italian composers. His repertoire was vast, with notable interpretations in works such as La Traviata, Aida, Rigoletto, Otello, and Don Carlo.

This conference will pay tribute to a tenor deeply admired at the Liceu, where, for four decades, he performed in titles such as La forza del destino, La Gioconda, Rigoletto, L’elisir d’Amore, and Aida.

The conference will be led by Pol Avinyó, a musicologist and member of the Amics del Liceu, and will feature historical audio and video recordings, some of them nearly unpublished, to showcase all of Bergonzi’s qualities and, above all, to continue cherishing his voice.
