On the occasion of the performance of Lohengrin at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in March, we invite you to discover all the secrets of this pivotal work by Richard Wagner.
Lohengrin, premiered in 1850 in Weimar under the direction of Franz Liszt, is an opera that combines myth, chivalry, and redemption in a fascinating story full of symbolism. The plot revolves around a mysterious knight who arrives in a boat pulled by a swan to defend the innocent Elsa of Brabant, with the sole condition that she never ask him his name or origin. This premise allows Wagner to explore themes such as faith, destiny, and sacrifice, wrapped in music of hypnotic beauty, with iconic passages such as the famous Prelude and the renowned Bridal March.
This production features the set design by Katharina Wagner, great-granddaughter of the composer and director of the Bayreuth Festival, who brings a contemporary perspective to the work while respecting its mythical and timeless essence.
The conference will be led by Enrique Gavilán, a university professor specializing in the relationships between theatre and history.
Enrique Gavilán Domínguez is a retired professor from the Department of Medieval History at the University of Valladolid. Throughout his career, he has been a guest professor at various universities, including the University of Valencia, the University of Bayreuth, the University of California in Berkeley, Columbia University, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
He is a member of the interdisciplinary research group "Sagunto," based at the University of Valencia, focused on the study of Greek theatre and its modern continuities. His research primarily focuses on the theory of history, particularly the relationships between theatre and history.
