Joseph Leutgeb (1732-1811) was a prominent Austrian horn player from the second half of the 18th century, and performed many concerts across Europe. In 1763, he became the principal horn player of the orchestra in Salzburg, where he became friends with the Mozart family. He traveled with them to Italy, and Leutgeb remained friends with Wolfgang Amadeus until the composer’s death.
Mozart ended up composing four concertos and a string quintet for horn with Leutgeb in mind. The composer had a deep affection for the musician and great respect for his skills.
In addition to the last two horn concertos from the Mozartian catalog, we will be able to listen to the concerto for two horns initially attributed to Haydn, which is now believed to have been written by Antonio Rosetti, originally from Bohemia, but whose name was Italianized.
A set of animated scores full of chromatics with the typical playful, elegant contrasts characteristic of classicism.
