Maestro Josep Pons receives one of the highest institutional honors for his contribution to the country’s musical and cultural excellence, and for his career at the helm of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
The Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia has awarded the 2025 Creu de Sant Jordi to Maestro Josep Pons, current musical director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, in recognition of his artistic career and his outstanding contribution to the cultural life of the country. The proposal was driven by the Minister of Culture.
Since 2012, Josep Pons has led the Liceu Orchestra and Chorus, and has been a key figure in consolidating the musical project of the Theater. With a rigorous and constant direction, he has contributed to giving the ensemble its own identity, raising its artistic level and gaining recognition from both the public and the critics.
He is considered a leading figure in the world of classical music and has conducted the most important orchestras in major concert halls around the world. Thanks to his recordings, with over 50 albums released with Harmonia Mundi France and Deutsche Grammophon, he has received several awards, including Grammys and Cannes Classical Awards.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu celebrates this distinction and joins the tribute to the maestro, highlighting the milestones achieved during his fourteen years at the helm of the musical team, as well as the long journey that began with his debut at the Theater in 1993.
The institution underscores the profound and enduring legacy of Josep Pons, who has marked one of the most musically prosperous periods in the Liceu's history, culminating in the upcoming season.
