The Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Palau de la Música Catalana, and L’Auditori, under the umbrella of Barcelona Obertura and in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council
The Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Palau de la Música Catalana, and L’Auditori, under the umbrella of Barcelona Obertura and in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council, are returning with the free concerts of 'Clàssica a la platja' on July 11 and 12 at Platja de Sant Sebastià, expanding their format and featuring internationally renowned names.
The initiative, also supported by the "La Caixa" Foundation, aims to continue bringing symphonic music to all of society and making it accessible to all audiences. On this occasion, the two concerts will be the highlight of the Regata Cultural, the program of cultural activities accompanying the Copa América, which the Barcelona City Council presented this morning at a press conference attended by the three directors Valentí Oviedo (Liceu), Robert Brufau (L’Auditori), and Joan Oller (Palau).
The first concert, scheduled for July 11, will feature the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and the National Orchestra of Catalonia conducted by their titular director, Ludovic Morlot, and the Orfeó Català, accompanied by great Catalan voices such as soprano Serena Sáenz and baritone Josep Ramon Olivé, as well as internationally recognized voices like mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham and tenor Freddie de Tommaso.
The repertoire will pay tribute to the anthems of major sporting events and will include beloved pieces such as the final movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, the aria Nessun dorma from Puccini's Turandot, Orff's O’Fortuna, and the iconic theme Barcelona, which Freddie Mercury composed for Montserrat Caballé and the 1992 Olympic Games.
The second concert, scheduled for July 12 at 9 p.m. at Platja de Sant Sebastià, will feature the Chorus and Symphony Orchestra of the Liceu, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, with the participation of two internationally renowned soloists, violinist María Dueñas and cellist Pablo Ferrández, and with the collaboration of the Children's Choir of the Orfeó Català. The audience will enjoy a repertoire for all ages with a selection of the most emblematic compositions by the renowned composer John Williams. During the concert, pieces from Superman, Jurassic Park, E.T., Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc., will be performed. An evening with the sea as a backdrop to enjoy with family and friends.
And with the aim of bringing music to vulnerable groups who cannot go to the beach, the Cor Petits and Cor Mitjans of the Orfeó Català will perform various acts and workshops in nursing homes in the neighborhood, as well as the Chamber Choir of the Palau de la Música Catalana offering a free performance at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona.
