The Liceu’s opera gala celebrates opera with an evening of four extraordinary voices

Barcelona, 29 May 2025

The stars of this major event will be Marina Rebeka, Clémentine Margaine, Martin Muehle, and Ludovic Tézier, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu under the baton of maestro Giuseppe Finzi. This Opera Gala is part of the commemoration of the 178th anniversary of the opening of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, celebrated this past 4 April.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu celebrates its 178th anniversary with four great international voices. On 6 June, the Barcelona opera house will mark another year of its illustrious history with the presence of four singers who embody vocal excellence in today’s operatic scene. Soprano Marina Rebeka, mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine, tenor Martin Muehle, and baritone Ludovic Tézier will take the stage for an evening that promises moments of high emotional intensity. They will bring to life—on the same night and stage—key characters in opera history, such as Carmen and Don José, El Cid, Thaïs and Athanaël, Dalila, Andrea Chénier, Leonora and Luna, or Amneris and Radamès. These are some of the most iconic roles by essential composers like Bizet, Massenet, Verdi, Saint-Saëns, and Giordano, who will shine in this emotion-filled, high-level Liceu gala.

These legendary characters will come back to life at the Liceu thanks to the unmatched artistry of Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka, who made her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2021/22 season singing Norma, and returned this season alongside Gustavo Dudamel and the London Symphony Orchestra. Rebeka has performed in theatres all over the world: the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall in New York, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Royal Opera House in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, among others.

The Liceu audience will also be reunited with French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine, considered one of the leading mezzos of her generation. She has gained international acclaim in recent seasons performing at venues such as The Metropolitan Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper, among others, and has appeared at the theatre on La Rambla in La favorite (2017/18), Aida (2019/20), Carmen, and Adriana Lecouvreur (2023/24).

Brazilian tenor Martin Muehle is another major figure in today’s operatic scene, having brought his distinctive artistic personality to leading theatres around the world. Before the Barcelona audience, he has performed in operas such as Turandot, Cavalleria rusticana, and Pagliacci. Muehle will also return to this stage next season to sing Enzo Grimaldo in La Gioconda.

Renowned French baritone Ludovic Tézier is another artist who has built a true love story with the Liceu audience thanks to his exemplary performances since his debut in the 2006/07 season in some of the most important titles of his repertoire: Manon Lescaut, Le nozze di Figaro, Falstaff, La forza del destino, Macbeth, Il trovatore... Tézier was also one of the standout voices at the concert celebrating the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

In the extensive program of the gala, this quartet of operatic aces will perform arias, scenes, and duets from operas such as Le Cid, Samson et Dalila, Thaïs, Carmen, Nabucco, Andrea Chénier, I vespri siciliani, and Il trovatore.

On the podium of the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu will be the esteemed Italian maestro Giuseppe Finzi, returning to the baton after making his debut at the theatre with Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia in the 2014/15 season and Donizetti’s La fille du régiment in the 2016/17 season. In addition to conducting the vocal performances, the maestro will also lead instrumental moments such as the overtures from Le Cid and Nabucco.
