The Liceu lights up with the colossal voices of Asmik Grigorian and Matthias Goerne

The concert will be a unique opportunity to enjoy Wagner and Strauss in an evening of high artistic intensity. Josep Pons will lead an emotional journey with Asmik Grigorian and Matthias Goerne, two exceptional voices. The program includes the 'Liebestod', the 'Lament of King Marke', 'Wotan’s Farewell', and the 'Vier letzte Lieder'. A sonic gift for opera lovers.

Soprano Asmik Grigorian and baritone Matthias Goerne will star in a unique concert on Wednesday, July 2, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, accompanied by the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra and conductor Josep Pons.

Asmik Grigorian, considered one of the most prestigious voices on the international opera scene, will bring her artistic excellence to a concert of great emotional depth.

Matthias Goerne, recognized as one of the great baritones of his generation, will offer a deep and nuanced interpretation in a recital promising intensity and refinement.

The soprano will perform Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Wagner’s Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. Meanwhile, Goerne will perform the Lament of King Marke from Tristan und Isolde and Wotan’s Farewell from Die Walküre by Wagner.

Grigorian and Goerne, two colossal voices, will embody unconsummated love, betrayal, and death in a magical night of a sonic gift for opera lovers.

Conductor Josep Pons will take the podium to lead the Gran Teatre del Liceu Orchestra in a night of great arias and symphonic interludes.

Asmik Grigorian

Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian, considered one of the most prestigious voices on the international opera scene, has been recognized by media such as The New York Times as “one of the most powerful dramatic artists of the moment.” A regular at the world’s leading opera houses, she has performed at the Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro Real in Madrid, Salzburg Festival, and Teatro alla Scala, and has received awards such as Female Opera Singer of the Year at the Ópera XXI Awards (2022) and the prestigious Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis (2024). She made her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2017/18 season with Anton Rubinstein’s Demon and has returned this season as the lead in an acclaimed Rusalka.

Matthias Goerne

German baritone Matthias Goerne, considered one of the most profound and expressive performers of the lyric and lied repertoire, has performed at the world’s leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Royal Opera House in London, Teatro Real in Madrid, Opéra national de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and Wiener Staatsoper. His notable roles include Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Amfortas (Parsifal), Marke (Tristan und Isolde), Wotan (The Ring of the Nibelung), and Wozzeck, as well as leading roles such as the Count of Blankenburg and Jochanaan in Salome. At the Gran Teatre del Liceu, he has performed multiple times: debuting with a Mahler concert in the 2006/07 season and returning for a recital (2008/09), War Requiem and Wozzeck (2021/22), Parsifal (2022/23), and Die Zauberflöte (2021/22). His discography has been widely acclaimed, with five Grammy nominations and awards such as the ICMA, Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine Award, and Diapason d’Or. Since 2001, he has been an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London.
