This September 30, the Liceu opens its digital season with The Cunning Little Vixen, a jewel by Leoš Janáček written from a libretto by the composer himself, based on popular comic strips published in the local newspaper Lidové noviny of Brno, where the score premiered in 1924.

This intelligent production by the always brilliant stage director Barrie Kosky begins with images of a funeral: black landscapes, dark silhouettes, heavy movement. Gradually, the characters withdraw one by one behind the silver curtain representing the forest stage. The animals emerge from the grave where the earth has just been poured. Without a pantheistic conception, Kosky avoids the green colors of nature and fake trees, and the singers portraying the different animals are simply dressed in colors, not as animals, contrasting with the black clothing of their human counterparts.
Josep Pons, a profound expert on the composer and his prodigious orchestral writing, delivers a masterful reading with the authority of experience and hard-earned quality.
An unpredictable performance that makes us feel the urgency of reflecting on how humanity relates to the planet, without hiding any of the unsettling moments of the score, while highlighting the climaxes of tenderness, sensuality, and beauty. Janáček displayed a deep understanding of life, leading a return to simplicity. He loved this work so much that he left a special request: that the final scene be performed at his funeral in 1928.
