The Gran Teatre del Liceu will host on Thursday, 19 March, a recital by Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, accompanied by pianist Vincenzo Scalera, with whom he has maintained a long artistic collaboration. The program spans different styles and composers, from Mozart and Rossini to the French repertoire of Massenet and Gounod, and also includes zarzuela arias by Chapí, Vives, and Serrano, before culminating with Verdi. An evening that highlights the tenor’s versatility and vocal condition.
Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, one of the most beloved voices by the Liceu audience, returns to the stage of the Gran Teatre del Liceu to present a recital covering some of the most significant moments of his current repertoire. At a splendid vocal peak, the artist appears in Barcelona accompanied on piano by Vincenzo Scalera in an evening that combines technical precision, expressive sensitivity, and a carefully curated selection of works.
Renowned for a bright, airy voice with great technical precision, Flórez will offer a program that moves through the classical elegance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the virtuosity of Gioachino Rossini, as well as pages from the French repertoire by Jules Massenet and Charles Gounod. The second part will also feature zarzuela arias by Ruperto Chapí, Amadeo Vives, and José Serrano, broadening the stylistic range of an evening that will culminate with Verdi.
The recital will also include piano pieces by Ernesto Lecuona and Franz Liszt, creating a program that highlights both the tenor’s versatility and the intimate dialogue between voice and piano. At his side, the renowned pianist Vincenzo Scalera, with whom he maintains a long-standing artistic collaboration, has performed with Juan Diego Flórez in top-tier venues such as the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Carnegie Hall, Teatro alla Scala, Philharmonie de Paris, as well as at major festivals like Salzburg and Lucerne.

With a career marked by success and international recognition, Juan Diego Flórez has established himself as one of the great tenors of our time. He has performed on the world’s leading opera stages, including the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra National de Paris, and Teatro alla Scala in Milan, among many others.
Throughout his career, he has been particularly distinguished in the bel canto repertoire, with landmark performances in operas by Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, and Gaetano Donizetti. In recent years, he has expanded his repertoire to French romantic opera, with titles such as Roméo et Juliette and Faust by Charles Gounod, or Werther and Manon by Jules Massenet, as well as selected roles in works by Verdi and Puccini.
Last season, he captivated the audience at the Gran Teatre del Liceu performing the role of Tony in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, in a concert version, in a spectacular season finale. He appeared alongside Nadine Sierra with Gustavo Dudamel on the podium.
At the Liceu, Flórez made his debut in the 1999/2000 season in a concert conducted by Riccardo Muti on the occasion of the theater’s reopening. Since then, he has performed there numerous times, becoming one of the most beloved tenors by the Liceu audience. He has performed Leicester in Maria Stuarda by Donizetti (2003/04), Idreno in Semiramide by Rossini (2005/06); Don Ramiro in La cenerentola by Rossini (2007/08); Tonio in La fille du régiment by Donizetti (2009/10); Elvino in La sonnambula by Bellini (2013/14), and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti (2015/16), the role in which he debuted the character. He has also given several recitals at the theater, accompanied on piano by Vincenzo Scalera and, more recently, by Cécile Restier.
His discography equally reflects this solid and versatile career, with recordings of complete operas, solo albums, and audiovisual productions that have received numerous international awards. In 2024, he founded his own record label, releasing a first album dedicated to zarzuela arias.
Beyond his artistic activity, Juan Diego Flórez maintains a strong commitment to musical education and social inclusion. In 2011, he founded Sinfonía por el Perú, a project that provides children and young people—especially from vulnerable communities—with access to high-quality musical training, which has become a benchmark initiative in the social and educational field.
