The Gran Teatre del Liceu presents the second edition of concerts at the Ciutadella Park Greenhouse, following its reopening in December 2023 and the celebration of the first edition last season. This iconic space in Barcelona, recently restored, will become the stage for four chamber concerts on March 22 and 23 with members of the Liceu Orchestra and Choir.

This initiative, supported by the Barcelona Institute of Culture, aims to bring classical music closer to the public and make it more accessible with a unique experience in a historic and charming setting, promoting proximity with the audience and offering tickets at affordable prices.

The event is part of the ‘Constel·lacions’ cycle, a series of chamber concerts created by Maestro Josep Pons with the aim of showcasing the ensembles formed within the Liceu Symphony Orchestra. Performed in small formats and short-duration programs, these recitals offer an intimate taste of classical music.

Tickets for the concerts at the Greenhouse, with a capacity of 100 people, are now available on the theater's website and at the box office for five euros.

Concerts at the Greenhouse

Saturday, March 22
12:00 PM - Trio Cenit | Discovering Dohnányi

This concert features Ernst von Dohnányi, composer of the Serenade Op. 10, one of the most acclaimed works in the string trio repertoire. The composition is in a late Romantic style, although it fits into a period when avant-garde movements were exploring new sonic landscapes. In addition to being a composer, Dohnányi was a prominent conductor and pianist, recognized for his interpretations of Beethoven's piano concertos and recordings of the sonatas by this composer. The concert also includes Beethoven’s Op. 3, a work that reflects his mastery in writing for this ensemble, with a great variety of textures.

7:00 PM - Bach in Motion Ensemble | Counterpoint and Devotion: A Dialogue Between Bach and Pergolesi

The concert explores the dialogue between Bach and Pergolesi through two works that showcase Bach's mastery of counterpoint and his own interpretation of Pergolesi's work. Die Kunst der Fuge (1740-1750) is a cycle of fourteen fugues and four canons that illustrates Bach’s masterful knowledge of counterpoint. Using a simple theme in D minor, Bach constructs a series of fugues and canons for different numbers of voices, without specifying instrumentation or order, making it one of his most theoretical and abstract works.

12:00 PM - Cantorum Bassonum Ensemble | Invitation to the Journey

The program of this concert presents an eclectic selection of works with an unusual formation of rich sound that combines the versatility of the bassoon and the voice in chamber music. Featuring works by various composers, the event offers a sonic journey that explores deep emotions through the variety of expressive shades, from Romanticism to the contemporary. From the melancholy of L’invitation au voyage (“The Invitation to the Journey”) to the lightness of Deux Pièces (“Two Pieces”), by Jean Françaix, through the humor of Der todte Fagot (“The Dead Bassoon”), each piece invites reflection and musical appreciation.

Classicism will be the focus of the first part of the concert, with a work by W. A. Mozart, his Divertimento for String Trio, from which several movements will be performed. This piece, notable for its invention and good humor, has been considered a significant contribution to the art, where each instrument plays a main role, and each note conveys a sonic, spiritual, and sensitive contribution from the master of Salzburg.

The final piece of the concert, Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) by Arnold Schönberg, is a work for string sextet considered the composer’s first major composition.
