This Wednesday, Sant Sebastià beach gathered 30,000 people for an exceptional evening of music and emotion with Mar i Cel, the contemporary classic by Dagoll Dagom, in a symphonic version performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

The concert, conducted by Pablo Assante and Sergi Cuenca, opened with A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Felix Mendelssohn and culminated with a very special symphonic version of Mar i Cel, with arrangements performed by the Liceu’s Chorus and Orchestra and sung by the Mar i Cel 2024 cast. An emotional and unique evening, presented by two iconic figures of Dagoll Dagom, Pep Cruz and Àngels Gonyalons, and with the participation of composer Albert Guinovart at the piano.

The Mar i Cel cast participating in the production included: Jordi Garreta, Alèxia Pascual, Abel García, Albert Gràcia, Berta Luna, Xavi Fernández, Eloi Gómez, Clara Renom, Sergio Escribano, Candela Díaz Sanz, Esteve Roig, Cisco Cruz, Albert Mora, Anna Alborch, Bittor Fernández, Estel Aparicio, Carme Giner, Biel Llongueras, Guillem Ripoll, and Guillem Fole.

During the concert, some of the musical’s most emblematic songs were performed, including Cançó d’Osman, Per què he plorat, Himne dels pirates, No estàs sola, and Les pomes — pieces that have moved generations over the years and that tonight were performed in a spectacular and moving symphonic version.

This was the first concert of the Clàssica a la Platja initiative, a free and open-to-all programme organised by L’Auditori, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Palau de la Música Catalana under the umbrella of Barcelona Obertura. Clàssica a la Platja will continue with a second concert tomorrow, Thursday July 10 at 9 pm, when the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC) will take the stage under the baton of chief conductor Ludovic Morlot, joined by the Chamber Choir of the Palau de la Música Catalana. Together they will present a festive and popular repertoire featuring Georges Bizet’s most famous and celebrated opera, Carmen, along with Tres danzas españolas by Enric Granados.

Beyond its musical value, Wednesday’s concert carried a very special symbolic meaning: it was one of the final chances to experience Mar i Cel live before Dagoll Dagom’s farewell from the stage, which will take place this Sunday at the Teatre Victòria. The musical will bid farewell, marking the end of a more-than-fifty-year trajectory of a company that has been fundamental in the history of Catalan theatre and culture. With the beach as stage and the sea as a natural backdrop, thousands of spectators were able to say goodbye to a work that is now an undisputed part of the country’s collective imagination.

The concert featured surtitles in Catalan, Spanish and English, and was held on a large stage measuring 20 metres wide by 22 deep, covered with a dome and supported by a 700-metre-long sound system along Sant Sebastià beach, covering 20,000 m² of sand. In addition, the event was fully accessible, with a designated area for people with reduced mobility and the Immersive Live system offering vibrating backpacks, induction loops, and Catalan sign language (LSC) interpretation.

With this concert, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Dagoll Dagom offered an unforgettable and free experience to bid farewell — as it deserves — to a work that has left a mark and will continue to sail on in the memory of an entire country.
