He studied at the Juilliard School in New York. His early engagements took him to opera houses in San Francisco, New York, Washington, Baltimore, and Saint Louis. In San Francisco, he has portrayed roles such as the Speaker (Die Zauberflöte), Abimelech (Samson et Dalila), and Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). Among his recent engagements are performances as Carl Olsen (Street Scene) in Cologne, Madrid, and Monte Carlo; Trulove (The Rake's Progress) in Nice and Nantes; Bonzo (Madama Butterfly) and the Recorder of Norwich (Gloriana) in Madrid; Rocco (Fidelio) in Munich and at the Buxton Festival; Simone (Gianni Schicchi) at the Salzburg Festival and the Nederlands National Opera; and Old Man (The Greek Passion) at the Salzburg Festival.
He debuted at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2001/02 season with Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and returned with Wozzeck (2021/22).
