Talk with Annalisa Stroppa and Celso Albelo about Madama Butterfly

On the occasion of the opera Madama Butterfly, the ‘Els interiors del Liceu’ lecture series by Amics del Liceu returns.
This time, the event will feature two prominent figures. Mezzo-soprano Annalisa Stroppa (Suzuki) and tenor Celso Albelo (Pinkerton) will share their experiences in the opera world in general and, specifically, with Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.
The event will be hosted by the president of Els Amics del Liceu, Jaume Graell.
Mezzo-soprano Annalisa Stroppa (Brescia, 1980), a graduate in Educational Sciences, trained at the Luca Marenzio Conservatory in Brescia. After winning several international singing awards, she made her international debut as Cherubino in Mercadante’s I due Figaro at the 2011 Salzburg Festival under the baton of Riccardo Muti, a production she reprised at the Ravenna Festival, Teatro Real, and Colón in Buenos Aires. Since then, she has performed at Italy's leading opera houses and on stages in Barcelona, Lausanne, Monte Carlo, Paris, Orange, Tel Aviv, Dallas, Saint Petersburg, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Dresden, Salzburg, Bregenz, Vienna, and other cities, in roles such as Carmen, Rosina, Angelina, Adalgisa, Giovanna Seymour, Romeo, Dorabella, Orfeo, Nicklausse, Hänsel, Fenena, and Suzuki.
She participated in the opening of La Scala’s season for two consecutive years (2016 and 2017) conducted by Chailly and performed Verdi’s Requiem with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Currentzis’ direction. She has also worked with conductors such as Campanella, Luisi, Mehta, Palumbo, Santi, Steinberg, and Thielemann, among others.
She made her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2014/15 season with Il barbiere di Siviglia and returned for Norma (2014/15) and Benvenuto Cellini (2015/16).
Tenor Celso Albelo (San Cristóbal de La Laguna, 1976) trained at the Conservatorio de Tenerife, the Escuela Superior de Canto Reina Sofía in Madrid, and under tenor Carlo Bergonzi. He has received awards such as the Premio Lírico Campoamor in 2010 and 2012 and the Ópera Actual Award in 2008. Additionally, in 2013, he was honored with the Gold Medal of the Canary Islands.
He has performed at opera houses worldwide: the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Royal Opera House in London, Opéra national de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Real in Madrid, and Palau de les Arts in Valencia, among others. His repertoire includes I puritani, L’elisir d’amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, La favorite, Roberto Devereux, Lucrezia Borgia, Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena, Werther, Il Trovatore, Rigoletto, La Bohème, and Madama Butterfly.
He made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2013/14 season with La sonnambula, and has since returned for I Capuleti e i Montecchi (2015/16), Thaïs (2016/17), I puritani, Hamlet (2018/19), Doña Francisquita (2019/20), and Macbeth (2022/23).
Jaume Graell is a doctor in Medicine, specializing in Rheumatology. He has been Head of Rheumatology at the Hospital Prínceps d’Espanya and the Dexeus Institute, among others. He is the director of the Catalan Institute of Rheumatology in Barcelona and Fibromadrid in Madrid.
President of Pro-Lírica, he organized the summer nights in Peratallada until 2002, featuring top-level singers. He is the vice president of the Franz Schubert Association. He has been vice president of Amics del Liceu since 2014, and is currently its president.
