German baritone Thomas Johannes Mayer is internationally celebrated for his powerful portrayals of major Wagner and Strauss roles. His career has led him to prestigious opera houses such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Opéra National de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro Real, and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as well as to the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mayer has earned recognition not only as a seasoned interpreter of Wagner but also for his performances as Macbeth at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Posa at La Scala, and Scarpia at the Opernhaus Zurich.
Recent engagements include debut performances as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Tokyo’s New National Theatre, Telramund in Lohengrin at the Dutch National Opera, and Wotan (Das Rheingold/Die Walküre) at Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Following his engagement at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Mayer will return to the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the 2024/2025 season for roles as Hans Sachs and Mandryka in Arabella. He will also make his debut as Simone in Florentinische Tragödie at the New National Theatre in Tokyo.
He debuted at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2012/13 season with the concert version of Lohengrin.
