The magic of winter arrives at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with 'The Nutcracker', Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s immortal ballet that continues to captivate generations.
“Life without enchantment is just a shadow.”
Friedrich Schiller
When winter unfolds its magic and cold turns into mystery, few works evoke the spirit of fantasy with such intensity as The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
This year, the Gran Teatre del Liceu hosts the Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe, presenting a personal and refined interpretation of this universal classic. The performance invites audiences on a journey through dreams, where music and dance become bridges to a world of illusion and timeless beauty.
Premiered in Saint Petersburg in 1892, based on Hoffmann’s tale adapted by Alexandre Dumas, The Nutcracker is a stage poem in which Christmas and fantasy intertwine. Tchaikovsky’s score, rich in orchestral colours and unforgettable melodies, has turned the story of Clara and her little soldier into a sonic universe that oscillates between intimate tenderness and joyful exuberance, featuring iconic moments such as the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and the “Waltz of the Flowers”.
In the version of The Girl and The Nutcracker by the Staatstheater Karlsruhe Ballet, choreographer Bridget Breiner offers an intimate and human interpretation of the tale. The story focuses on family and social tensions: the Stahlbaum family has lost their fortune and Clara Marie inherits only the Nutcracker doll from her eccentric godfather, Drosselmeyer.
Breiner’s classical and exuberant choreography gives rise to emotionally charged pas de deux, with dramatic lifts, jumps and virtuosic turns that express both danger and tenderness. Set in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the set design and costumes reinvent the story with a nostalgic yet renewed elegance.
Performed with live orchestra at the Liceu, The Nutcracker becomes a privileged experience that reaffirms the vitality of a century-old tradition: an invitation to let oneself be carried away by music, dance and the capacity to dream.
