Instead of a love letter, Mahler gifted Alma with this 'Adagietto'

Josep Pons will reveal to us the mysteries of this colossal score

Written between 1901 and 1904, Gustav Mahler's Fifth occupies a central place in the history of music. Since the composer's death, it has gained followers, becoming a crucial score, bridging the musical Romanticism and Modernism of the 20th century. A work that summarizes the achievements of predecessors and heralds new paths that others will explore.

The Fifth again stands as the second symphony without voices (purely instrumental after the First, "Titan"). During its composition period, Mahler met Alma Schindler and proposed to her in the fall of 1901.

As always with Mahler, all biographical facts are intrinsically related to the development of his work. Five movements ranging from the initial funeral march to demonic music, through the darkest and most dramatic passages, evocations of elements of nature, Austrian peasant dance folklore, the elegance of the Viennese waltz, and the intensity of the celebrated Adagietto (famous for being played by Leonard Bernstein at Robert Kennedy's funeral in 1968).

Instead of a love letter, Mahler gifted Alma with this Adagietto: a sonorous poem without words. Josep Pons, a recognized Mahler advocate, will be the one to reveal to us the mysteries of this colossal score.
