Born in Barcelona into a family with a strong musical tradition, he began his studies in solfège and piano at an early age and sang in the children’s choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. At 16, he started vocal studies under the guidance of his father, baritone Vicenç Esteve. In 1993, he made his operatic debut as the tenor lead in Marina and began performing zarzuela and opera in Spain’s प्रमुख theatres and concert halls.
He has won prizes in international singing competitions including Francisco Alonso, Jaume Aragall, Eugenio Marco, Operalia, Ciudad de Logroño and Vall d’Uixó. At the Wexford Festival Opera (Ireland), he received “The Gerard Arnhold Bursary” in 2003 for his performance in L’elisir d’amore.
He has performed at major venues such as the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro Real in Madrid, Palau de la Música Catalana, Fundació Òpera Catalunya, Festival de Peralada, Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Oviedo Opera Festival, ABAO, Granada Festival, Menorca, Ópera de Tenerife, Teatre Principal in Palma de Mallorca and Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville. Internationally, he has appeared with Washington Opera, Capitole de Toulouse, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Guangzhou Opera, Royal Opera House Muscat, Lithuanian National Opera and Teatro Municipal de Lima.
He has collaborated with stage directors including Núria Espert, Calixto Bieito, Lluís Pascual, Oriol Broggi, Bob Wilson, Carlos Saura, David McVicar and Mario Gas, and with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Marco Armiliato, Daniel Oren, Antoni Ros-Marbà and Josep Pons.
Recent engagements include La bohème, El abrecartas, Hadrian, Turandot and La Regenta at Teatro Real Madrid; Madama Butterfly and Doña Francisquita at the Palau de la Música Catalana; Arabella in Oviedo; and La tabernera del puerto in Lima.
He made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 1998/99 season with Salome and has returned frequently, most recently in Ariadne auf Naxos (2021/22).
