A program featuring Jolivet, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky
In the season commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich's death
In the season commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich's death, his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Symphony No. 10 are joined by the performance of the Piano and Trumpet Concerto.
An iconic figure of the 20th century and father of a gigantic creative body, his life and work continue to be subject to continuous revision. This Piano and Trumpet Concerto, which was premiered in 1933 in Leningrad with success, is the score of a young composer full of energy and humor, yet without abandoning the personal and characteristic lyricism. A masterpiece of the eclecticism of a young artist who, with the composition of this work, seems to close a chapter of his biography. The applause at the premiere will now turn into accusations and uncertainty.
The life of this 20th-century Beethoven, who will pivot between creativity and repression, talent against the mediocrity of censors, creative fantasy monitored and conditioned by tyranny.
The program is completed by Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite, a tribute to the classical ballet dances of the 18th century commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered at the Paris Opera in 1920 with sets and costumes by Pablo Picasso.
