Concert of the symphonic version of Bernstein's musical

Gustavo Dudamel leading the orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu

Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990), composer, conductor, and an essential musical educator for new generations, is considered one of the most iconic figures in the musical history of the United States. He represents a vital bridge between the great European classical tradition and the American proposition, which unfolds—in a voice of its own—the country's diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and even racial influences.

His most celebrated work is West Side Story, a musical premiered in 1957 with a libretto by Arthur Laurents (1917–2011) and lyrics by the late Stephen Sondheim (1930–2021). The pinnacle of Bernstein’s catalogue, and the result of ten years of conception before its first staging, the work was adapted from the stage to the screen by Robert Wise in 1961. It achieved overwhelming success, winning 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Since then, the work has become one of the landmark titles in musical film history. In 2021, Steven Spielberg created a new version with Gustavo Dudamel as musical director of the score and the New York Philharmonic—an orchestra once led by Bernstein himself. With powerful artistic choices, this reimagining sheds new light on the original's aesthetic vision.

This iconic score will be brought to life by Gustavo Dudamel conducting the orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, giving voice on stage to the emotions of a young couple whose love—like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—is forbidden by the rivalry between their respective clans.

A dream pursued, but one that—tragically—only the death of one of the lovers will make the community realise that understanding is a necessity, and that hatred is a poison for which there is no antidote.
