Born in Barcelona, he began his vocal studies with Maya Maiska, and later continued with Gino Becchi and Ettore Campogaliani in Italy, and with Armen Boyajian in New York.
Although he has always remained very close to the Verdi repertoire, he has performed other repertoires and composers as well, ranging from Verismo to bel canto, as well as contemporary opera, zarzuela, and Baroque music. He has sung all over the world: Paris, Vienna, Rome, Verona, Modena, Dresden, Madrid, Bilbao, Buenos Aires, Washington, San Francisco, and New York. He has worked with a large number of conductors, among whom Lamberto Gardelli, Richard Bonynge, Alberto Zedda, Daniel Oren, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, and Marco Armiliato stand out.
He made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with Lohengrin in the 1985/86 season, returning on numerous occasions, most recently with Thaïs (2006/07), Aida (2007/08 and 2011/12), Simon Boccanegra (2008/09), Turandot (2008/09), Il trovatore (2009/10), Adriana Lecouvreur (2011/12), Werther (2016/17), Roméo et Juliette (2017/18), Tosca (2018/19), Rigoletto (2021/22), and Gianni Schicchi (2022/23).
