Born in Pavia, Ambrogio Maestri studied Piano and Voice with Umberto Grilli. His international career began in 2001 when he made his debut as Falstaff at La Scala in Milan and at the Teatro Verdi in Busseto under the direction of Riccardo Muti and Giorgio Strehler.

At Teatro alla Scala, his engagements include leading roles in Don Pasquale and Gianni Schicchi, Jago in Otello, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Don Carlo di Vargas in La forza del destino, and Giorgio Germont in La traviata. He has also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. His repertoire includes the Count of Luna in Il trovatore, Amonasro in Aida, the title roles in Simon Boccanegra, Rigoletto, Nabucco, and Don Pasquale, as well as Tonio and Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, Gérard in Andrea Chénier, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, and Mamma Agata in Viva la Mamma.

Recent engagements include Il trittico at the Vienna State Opera, L’elisir d’amore at both the Bavarian State Opera and the Vienna State Opera, Il barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro Verdi in Salerno, and Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste.

He made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with Aida in the 2007/08 season, and has returned with Falstaff (2010/11), L’elisir d’amore (2012/13), Tosca (2013/14), Nabucco (2015/16), Il tabarro and Gianni Schicchi (2022/23), Adriana Lecouvreur (2023/24), and L’elisir d’amore (2025/26).
