The Gran Teatre del Liceu joins the Millennium of Montserrat with an exceptional concert of Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony, conducted by Josep Pons, to be held on Saturday, September 6, at the Basilica of Santa Maria. The Liceu Orchestra and Chorus, with the participation of the Orfeó Català, will perform The Resurrection, a majestic work that symbolizes the journey from death to life and reaffirms the Abbey’s cultural and musical dimension in its thousand years of history.
The Liceu ends the season with the highest number of spectators in recent years and a warm reception from the public. Opera has once again taken center stage with standout titles such as 'Madama Butterfly' and 'La traviata'. The digital commitment also grows with the success of the Liceu OPERA+ platform, and the presence of a younger audience increases. The Gran Teatre del Liceu closes the season with Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story in a symphonic version conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The voices of Nadine Sierra and Juan Diego Flórez bring the protagonists of this Broadway classic to life. The main cast is completed by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Anita, baritone Jarrett Ott as Riff, and baritone Milan Perišic in the role of Bernardo.
The work, a commission from the Gran Teatre del Liceu, premieres on July 19 and 21 with two semi-staged performances conducted by maestro Ros-Marbà, who returns to the Liceu podium at 88 years old. The stage direction is by Anna Ponces, in collaboration with the audiovisual studio Playmodes. 'Benjamin a Portbou', in two acts and 13 scenes, is based on the English libretto by Anthony Carroll Madigan and is inspired by the life of philosopher Walter Benjamin, who committed suicide in Portbou while fleeing Nazism.
As part of the Grec Festival programme, the project 'Òh!pera. Newly Created Micro-Operas' returns to the Gran Teatre with the world premiere of three small-format operas, which will be presented on the same evening in two sessions (6:00 pm and 7:30 pm) on July 25, 26, and 27.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Port of Barcelona, and the administrations that make up the consortium — the Ministry of Culture, the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council, and the Barcelona Provincial Council — continue progressing with the development of the Gran Teatre del Liceu’s second venue, Liceu Mar, by launching the architecture competition for the drafting of the project.
This Wednesday, 30,000 people filled Sant Sebastià beach to experience an exceptional night with Mar i Cel, the classic by Dagoll Dagom, in a symphonic version performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The concert, conducted by Pablo Assante and Sergi Cuenca, opened with Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and culminated in an emotional symphonic performance of Mar i Cel with the 2024 cast.
Maestro Jonathan Nott will become the new Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu starting in the 2026/2027 season and for five seasons. Nott succeeds Maestro Pons after fourteen years leading the Theatre’s Orchestra. Jonathan Nott’s career, marked by profound mastery and a contemporary sensitivity, traces a sonic journey from Mozart and Schubert to Mahler, Bruckner, and Shostakovich, reaching the very edge of contemporary creation.
On July 4, Rusalka by Dvořák will be broadcast live, with stage direction by Christof Loy and musical direction by Josep Pons, featuring Asmik Grigorian and Piotr Beczała on Liceu OPERA+. The platform, relaunched in March, offers a digital subscription with 12 titles for 60 euros until July 31, and 90 euros thereafter. Ramon Gener will host the performance, interviewing the main artists.
